A passionate entrepreneur, filmmaker and digital wellness advocate. I’m also your Digital Detox Week teacher and guide along this journey.

Yasmin Wilnis, digital detox expert and founder of The Year of Growth

As a filmmaker, I was used to spending hours looking at a screen, crafting stories that inspired me. As a content creator in the early 2010s, I loved editing my personal development YouTube videos, not caring about who saw them or how many views they got. But somewhere along the way, that passion turned into digital consumption and overwhelm.

My mind eventually started racing at 100 km/h, jumping between tabs and tasks (literally and figuratively) all in the name of productivity. It didn’t help that my loyalty to others was greater than that to myself, sacrificing my time and energy to those around me. I realised I wasn’t living the balanced, intentional life I truly desired when I entered the digital space.

In December 2023, I made a drastic change: I quit social media cold turkey and committed to a year-long digital detox. The transformation was life-changing. I reclaimed my time, my focus, and my sense of peace.

As I continued sharing my journey offline and hearing other people’s digital struggles, I realised I needed to share this with more people. Do I need to be completely off my phone for the entire week?

You don’t need to be completely off your phone for the entire week. Instead, this is about being more mindful of how you use it. You’ll experience specific moments where you challenge yourself, like going 24 hours without your phone, but this isn’t about perfection. It’s about the awareness you develop around your habits, and how you can slowly shift them to serve your well-being. It’s okay if it feels uncomfortable — that’s where growth happens.

Do I need to take a week off to commit fully?

No, you do not need to take a week off. The real transformation happens when you integrate these changes into your daily life. This program is designed to work around your schedule, helping you navigate your regular routine while reducing digital distractions. The goal is not just to detox for a week but to build lasting habits that you can apply in your everyday activities. This integration into your routine is where the true power of Digital Detox Week lies.

How much time will I need to dedicate each day?

The commitment is manageable, but it will require your full presence. Each day, expect to spend around 1-2 hours on the challenges and deep work sessions. I know you’re busy, but this is your investment in yourself — a small amount of time each day for lasting, life-changing results. This isn’t about fitting in more tasks; it’s about reclaiming time for what matters. You’re creating new habits that will serve you long after the week ends.

Is the prep week mandatory to participate in?

The prep week isn’t mandatory to participate in, but it is highly recommended. The prep is designed to help you feel more prepared and grounded before diving into the detox week. The only mandatory part is the kick-off call on Sunday, where we’ll set our intentions, go over the plan for the week, and get everyone ready for a successful detox. While the prep isn’t required, it’s a great opportunity to start reflecting and getting aligned so you can make the most of the upcoming transformation!

What if I can't fully participate in some of the challenges due to my schedule?

Digital Detox Week is not a flexible program. We’ve designed it to be a transformational experience with clear actions each day. Full participation is required to achieve the results you want. If you’re serious about making a change in your relationship with technology, you need to fully commit to the program. We will provide support every step of the way to ensure you’re getting the most out of it.

Is this digital detox for all technology, or just my phone?

The focus of Digital Detox Week is primarily on reducing phone screen time and becoming more mindful of your overall tech usage. While we emphasize taking a break from the constant distractions of your phone, we also encourage you to examine and adjust your use of other devices like computers, tablets, and even entertainment tech. It’s not about completely disconnecting from all technology, but rather learning to use it intentionally and mindfully so that it supports your well-being instead of overwhelming you. This approach allows you to integrate healthier tech habits into your everyday life, no matter your device.

I work a 9-5 and sit behind a computer all day. How does that work?

I completely understand – many of us spend hours behind a screen during the workday, which can make it feel even harder to disconnect. Digital Detox Week is designed to help you balance your tech use, even in a tech-heavy work environment. The goal isn’t to escape your screen entirely but to become more mindful of how you use it. Throughout the week, you’ll be encouraged to create uninterrupted focus time during your workday, take screen-free breaks, and engage in offline activities. This will help you regain control of your time and focus, even within the constraints of your job. The program works by giving you the tools to integrate healthier habits into your daily routine, so you don’t feel overwhelmed or consumed by technology.

What happens if I miss the live calls or check-ins?

Life happens, and we get it. If you miss a live call or check-in, don’t worry – the recordings are there for you to catch up. However, the live check-ins and calls are an essential part of the program. These are moments for reflection, accountability, and real-time support to ensure you’re staying on track. I strongly encourage you to stay engaged and make the most of the community support. You’re here to invest in your well-being, and your growth happens when you show up for yourself. Each session, live or recorded, is a moment to reflect, learn, and commit to the process.

I’ve tried other digital detoxes before, but they didn’t work. How is this different?
